Neat freakish

My kids call me a neat freak, and while that is my tendency, if you’ve had a chance to visit my house in the last year, you wouldn’t agree with them.  This house is anything but neat.  I honestly can’t blame anyone for the lack of neatness.  We are all really busy and have tended to just put stuff down on the bar counter, coffee table, stools, ottoman, etc. as we’ve walked in the door.  We’ll plop down on the couch, rearrange pillows for comfort’s sake and pull on a blanket because we are chilled.  When we get up we throw off the blanket, and go to our rooms, to eat, to run errands, etc. and leave the messes we’ve created behind.  I understand that we’ve left stuff on the coffee table because we aren’t quite done with what we were doing and plan to get back to it hours/days later.  I get that we throw our bags down and plan to take them up to our rooms when we go upstairs the first time, but that rarely happens. After a tour of Pinterest, magazine homes, and old pictures of my apartment in Turkey I was fed up with the clutter I was seeing around me.  I told my housemates…you know…kids and partner…that I was throwing everything not in it’s proper place in the middle of the living room floor.  What wasn’t claimed was being thrown out or sent to goodwill.  So far we’ve done the living room and kitchen.  Today I will tackle the dining room and gameroom.  We had visitors all the time back in Turkey and I never worried about whether or not my house was presentable enough.  I just made sure it was.  I know I shouldn’t care so much what my house looks like, but I do.  I don’t want people to walk in and wonder if they should have had a hepatitis shot before they showed up.  And I promise I have no problems with a house that looks lived in.  I expect my house to have some stuff out of place at times.  It’s just the piles start adding up and it looks junky.  And I won’t judge* you on your house either.  It’s just my house that must be neat and clean.

And in my defense…I wasn’t working when I lived in Turkey and my house almost always looked like this.DSC00782.2DSC00781.2DSC00784.2

I do see a pile of something unidentifiable on the table along with a soda bottle, but even so…not too bad.
DSC00786.2I do feel that using the fact that we are all working and busy is a bit of a copout.  It doesn’t take that long to pick up after ourselves.  And while those living room pictures might give you the idea that we didn’t live in that room, I promise we did!  There were usually kids laying around on the couches, and a toy or two in the floor.  Homework was done on the dining room table as well as the kitchen table.  This picture was taken during the day while the kids were at school.  I usually made sure we picked up any mess or stray stuff at night before we went to bed.  That way the house was ready for any unexpected visitors the next day.  In Turkey, we had lots of unexpected visitors so this was a necessity.

I don’t expect my house here to have this same look.  We have 2 dogs and the hair and dog toys are a daily battle.  Our schedules here aren’t as consistent as they were there.  Here, there is a lot more individual coming and going.  That makes it harder to keep it picked up I think.  What I am going to expect is for everyone to pick up their stuff when they go to bed.  When we get up from our cozy spot on the couch, we will put the pillows back where they go and fold the blanket we were using.  Our shoes will be brought upstairs with us instead of thrown about the living room.  Dog toys will be put back in the basket nightly.  Picking up after ourselves will add about 2 minutes to our day, and we all have 2 minutes to spare.

*Or at least I try really hard not to judge the cleanliness of houses or cars.  I did ride with this one catering person once when I worked for Panera and her car was the most disgusting thing I had ever seen.  There were melted crayon streaks on the front passenger seat.  I was wearing black pants and every time I got in her car I had to feel the crayon spots to make sure they wouldn’t get stuck to my butt.  There were unidentified masses in the cup holders and so much random crap in the floor that I had no choice but to rest my feet on it. She had so many old food wrappers, half eaten chicken nuggets, books, toys, moldy food, and trash in the back of her car that I didn’t see how she could even begin to take food for delivery in that car.  Honestly, I was so totally grossed out by it, but she didn’t seem to mind at all that I was seeing that mess.  The most amazing part was that she talked about being so excited when her husband bought her that car because she had always wanted a Mustang.  And it was so nasty!!!  Ok…done judging.

Grandma T-shirts

On Monday, Sweet Tea will be 41.  That’s right, she’s one of the over 40 crowd.  For her birthday her daughter got her a cute grandma t-shirt.  Yep, she’s a grandma to a sweet little boy.  The thing is she is not the type to wear a cute grandma t-shirt.  A shirt with a picture of him wearing war paint, sticking his tongue out, with spiked multicolored hair….yes.  A cute grandma shirt….no.  Let’s find some examples…

images

Nope…not her.

I can’t picture her wearing this one, either.

las_vegas_stays_at_grandmas_womens_plus_size_sco

Not even this one works.

Here’s my take on cool grandma shirts.

children-wear-fashion-skull-cool-shirts-childA shirt with this kid’s mug on it would be awesome…you know…if he were her grandson and all.

mohawkOr this…perfect!

bigstockphotoStickingOutTongue27088Now this would be fantastic on a grandma shirt.

And for the record…I wouldn’t wear one of the cute grandma shirts either.  They are sweet, but I can’t imagine me wearing one of them.  I can’t picture my mom or my grandmothers ever wearing one either!  Just not our style I guess.

So to my children and future grandchildren…take note.  (Of course they don’t read this blog, nor do I want them to so one of you people needs to make sure they know my thoughts on grandma shirts.  Thank you.)  For Sweet Tea, sadly, it’s too late!

(Clicking on the pictures will bring you to the website where they were found.  Thanks!)

I am third.

Over the last several years I have tried living out my faith in spite of my sexuality.  I struggled some with what that should look like, and at times I felt like I did nothing but sit there.  Ultimately, I figured that all I could really do was to continue to do what I knew.  Love, encourage, serve.  I haven’t always succeeded in those tasks, especially when I’m being treated poorly, but they are my ultimate goal.

One of my teenage sons told me of an award they gave out at camp this summer.  It was called the “I am Third” award.  It was given to the student who best lived by the idea that God was first, everyone else was second, and they were third.  That’s a good goal to have.

Today I was perusing the internet and somehow came across this.  I love where her focus is.  It reminds me where my focus should be.

trash, junk, poop, mess

So this morning I was frustrated.  As for why, I submit to you the following text message I sent to the two kids who live in this house full time.

I went upstairs this morning to get Tator Tot (the dog) and was disgusted with the condition of the upstairs. Particularly your bathroom and bedrooms as well as the laundry room. I cleaned the cat litter, washed the towels on the laundry room floor that were peed on by cats, took out overflowing trash from your bathroom, and swept the laundry room floor. I also unloaded and reloaded the dishwasher, took out the recycling that was falling all over the pantry floor, set and started the sprinklers, picked up cups from the living room, and played on my iPad. I could do that because despite working at least 50 hours this week I managed to keep my bedroom, bathroom, and closet picked up. I also don’t appreciate being expected to provide toilet paper, body wash, food, etc., and for those who expect it to have attitude (this happened over the last few days) because I overlooked the fact that we were out of said product when they have little regard for the cleanliness of anything else.  Why wipe or wash when nothing else is clean? As you can tell I am frustrated with two “grown-ups” living like they don’t have responsibilities. Liliana (the house cleaner) comes this week and your area will be cleaned. That means you will be picking it up today. Completely.

And the second text message…sent a few minutes later…

And I expect things to be stepped up as far as seeing something that needs to be done and doing it. That recycling could have been taken out a week ago. The kitchen cleanliness/dishwasher is ignored by everyone unless I ask them to load or unload or clean it. Do not put a dirty dish in the sink without first checking the dishwasher. You girls are smart girls but just in case you don’t know… You can tell if it is clean because there will be water standing on tops of cups on the top rack. On the off chance that it is full of dirty dishes and there is no room or it is running, wash what you used by hand. I’m tired of coming home to a sink full of dirty dishes and a dishwasher half full of dirty dishes.  Lazy is all it is.  If you see a laundry basket full of clean clothes fold them. I walked by three laundry baskets at the top of the stairs. They have all been there since last weekend. You guys walked by them numerous times this week as you were coming and going and did nothing about them. Be proactive please concerning all aspects of picking up and cleaning up.

I don’t go upstairs much except to do laundry and that is usually on weekends.  I will go up to talk to the kids or get a book off the shelf, but those things happen in the game room which is almost always clean.  I know that they don’t keep their rooms up to my standards, but there was no standard at all.  And the smell!!!  I don’t get it at all!  All I can say is it won’t get that bad again!

Suburban Underbelly

Recently I was offered the book, Suburban Underbelly, by Michele Theron as a read and review project.  I decided that it sounded like a fun story and took it on.  The story is about three women who feel somewhat trapped by the rituals of the typical suburban lifestyles they lead.  While lamenting over their lost freedoms since husbands and kids, they decide to take the term “playdate” to a whole new level.

The following contains spoilers so read at your own risk.

The characters Lucy, Quinn, and Jill all have believable stories, and I could relate to each one of them at certain points in the story.  Lucy has a perfect husband, child, house and longs for excitement.  Quinn is non-confrontational, coexists with her husband, and tries to be the perfect mom.  Jill is recently divorced and trying to figure out how being gay works. They meet once a week for a 3 hour playdate for their children and discuss what’s going on in their lives.  One week they decide to up the ante a bit and indulge in playdates for themselves as well.  Quinn offers to keep the kids and let the other women have fun.  She just wants to hear all about their adventures.

Lucy immediately hooks up with her neighbor, Brian, who she has been flirting with for some time.  Week after week they meet at one of their houses to have raucous sex.  Lucy reports her doings back to the other women at a weekly coffee date.  I guess this type of thing happens in real life, but I did have a few issues with this.  I can’t imagine good friends allowing/encouraging another friend to cheat on her husband and beg for details.  Especially a good guy.  If he was a jerk to her or neglectful or something I could understand it a little better, but even Lucy says he’s a great guy.  I’m sure it has more to do with my upbringing and sense of right and wrong.  I guess I felt like the friends should have encouraged her differently.

Jill meets and gets involved with a woman.  I could relate to her and her hesitation concerning the idea.  She knows it’s who she is and what she wants, but figuring it out isn’t so easy.

And Quinn…she was probably my favorite character.  She is the watcher.  The thinker.  The writer.  She tries to see what is happening underneath it all in her own life as well as the lives of her neighbors.  I felt like she has a lot more to say and look forward to the sequel to see where Theron takes this character.

All in all this was a good book.  The characters push boundaries as they try to capture what made them interesting before kids.  It was a quick and easy read and for only $2.99 (digitally) it is worth it.

And the theme is Lazy…

Tyfanny from Come What May tagged me in a post way back at the beginning of August and because I’ve been a completely lazy blogger/blog reader lately I’ve just noticed it.  She awarded me the Liebster award which sounds very similar to the Biebster award which makes me question the origins of this award.  I scoured the internet (spent about 2 minutes looking) and discovered it’s German for dearest and is supposed to be awarded to bloggers with less than 200 readers.  Shoot…I have no idea how many readers I have, but judging from the comments, I would say the number falls at just under 5.  That being said, I qualify, so here goes the meme!  I think I’m also supposed to grab the award picture and post it here, but please refer to the lazy blogger line above.

I’m supposed to answer some questions about myself and then tag others to do the same.  Here goes…

What food does your family eat often; either because it’s a go-to, easy food, or because it’s a favorite?

Food around here is complicated these days!  My oldest and I are doing protein shakes and while they taste good the thought of chugging them some days gets the gag reflex going.  As far as other food goes, nobody has the same favorite so we tend to mix it up a lot.  For my crew Chicken Spaghetti is a favorite, but Sweet Tea and her daughter only tolerate it.  They love meatloaf which my kids like ok, but it’s not my favorite. We’ve eaten fish tacos and pork tacos quite a bit this summer…maybe that’s the best answer.  Something we buy and buy and buy because they are always eaten are those Totino’s frozen pizzas that cost $1.25.  The kids eat them for lunch/snack/breakfast/whenever.  We still need to get back into the swing of “regular” meals, evenings, habits now that school has started back up.

2. When your bed is “made”, how many pillows are on it? And then, how many do you actually sleep with? If there is a difference, please explain why.
When the bed is made, which only happens if I’m the last to leave, there are 4 pillows on it.  When we sleep there are four pillows as well, but only 3 are used.  I use one for my head and the other one leans up against the wall above my head.  Sweet Tea uses one to hug (I get too hot…premenopausal!) and one for her head.
3. How far away do you currently live from where you grew up?
Well, I moved a lot as a kid, but we always ended up coming back to the Houston area so I consider it home.  We currently live in the Houston area not too far from the 3 houses I lived in over the years as a kid.  As an adult I’ve lived in 3 more Houston area homes as well as the one I’m in now.  That’s a total of 7 houses in the area.  Yep, Houston is home.
4. Should I get an iPhone 5, or hold out for the 5s? (I currently have a 3gs)
I have no idea.  I have a 4, I think.  I’m not phone savvy so my opinions on the matter should never count!
5. What television show (that is currently on the air) do you really really love?
Well…when I was tagged back in August my answer would have been Whodunnit, but that show has now ended.  I don’t watch enough of any one show to say it’s my favorite at this point.  NCIS and Criminal Minds reruns are pretty much what’s on my TV lately.
6. Are you excited for the start of football season? Why or why not?
I have no thoughts whatsoever about this.  Football, schmootball.
7. What was the last book you read, and did you enjoy it?
I just finished Suburban Underbelly by Michele Theron.  It was pretty good.  I will be writing a review of it on my blog for my next blog post.
8. What was the last movie you saw (doesn’t have to be at the theater, maybe you caught it on Netflix), and what did you think of it?
Um…I honestly can’t remember the last movie I actually watched all the way through.  Probably Nottinghill on some TV station.  It’s one of my favorites so I stop almost every time I see it on TV.  I also love Fried Green Tomatoes.
9. Tell me about your favorite pet, from any time in your life.
Right now I have a Bichon Frise puppy named Tator Tot.  (She looks more like a maltese, and I’m questioning the authenticity of her heritage in my mind.  I honestly don’t care, because I just wanted a white, fluffy puppy…the owners said Bichon so that’s what I say.  She wasn’t registered and I have no paperwork so really she could be a mutt.  She sure is cute though!)  What’s not cute is the fact that she isn’t potty trained yet and now that school has started I don’t have as much time to work on it.  Sigh.
10. What kind of music can you listen to, no matter what mood you’re in?
I love rocker chicks.  Melissa Etheridge, P!NK, Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Knapp, etc.  I usually just put my music on shuffle and listen to whatever comes up.  I end up hearing a little of everything that way.  Sometimes I skip the geography songs I bought for my 5th grade class.  I can sing the Middle East Song, the Continents and Oceans song, and the Solar System songs by memory though!
11. Do you already have a wish list started for Christmas? What would you like to see under the tree this year?
First we need to work on getting a tree.  I grew up with real trees, started having fake trees when I moved overseas, and just threw out the last fake tree after Christmas last year.  We haven’t decided if we want to get another fake one or go for a real one this year.  I’m kinda wanting to get a real flocked tree just for something different this year.  My parents had one  several years ago and it was beautiful!  I don’t think I want to do a fake flocked tree and be committed to a flocked tree every year though.  We’ll see.
And now I’m supposed to tag some other bloggers and come up with some questions, but I am way too lazy for all that.  If you want to answer these same questions…because they’ve already been thought up, please feel free to do so.  I would love to read your answers so comment here to let me know you’re answering them!  I’ll come give them a readsie.

Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other’s gold.

Now that I’ve been out of the closet for 4 years I feel like I’ve been through the hardest parts of announcing that I’m gay.  Getting through losing all my friends, my family’s off and on alienation, and the adjustment of my kids was tough, and it all definitely took a toll on me.

One of the hardest things about all of it was/is the lack of a social life .  Before moving overseas in 2002, I was part of church groups, and mom groups, and kid groups.  I made several friends in each place.   And those friends were added to the couple of friends from high school, a handful of friends from college, and some friends my wasband and I made in our young married church Sunday school class right after we got married.  I had lots of friends!

When we moved overseas, we became friends with those who worked along side us as well as with people who went to our church.  Those friends became closer than family as we spent holidays together as well as encouraged and supported each other through all our life events.  We also added a new group of friends from church when we were back in the states for a 7 month stay in 2006.  We had friends everywhere, and I loved that.

My kids used to ask me who was coming over or who we were going to visit just about every day.  They were used to constantly having people over for dinner, eating at friends’ houses, going to lunch with people, grilling out at the park, going on vacations with friends, etc.  Our lives were full of activities and people to share them with.

When I left my church, came out, and got a divorce, every single friend that I had basically vanished.  I understand why.  Being gay goes against everything I was taught growing up.  All of my friends were either from church or had similar convictions as I did.  It took me a long time to be able to reconcile my faith with being gay, and I was living it.  My friends couldn’t do that.  They hadn’t experienced it.  I know most of them still love me, and I’m sure they pray for me on a regular basis.  I know some of them even miss me.  Anytime I see a friend from my past, they always give me a hug and are very warm and open.  Without fail.  But we don’t call each other or make plans like before.  And honestly, I think I would be just as uncomfortable as they would be.

So my only options are to make new friends.  Sweet Tea and I have been working on that some.  We joined a church that we have not been attending very regularly, and we met some really great people there.  We’ve gone to a gay campground several times and enjoyed the company of the people we met there.  These are both great places to meet people.  The problem is that the church isn’t close to our house, and most people seem to live either close to the church or on the other side of the city from us.  The people at the campground are from all over so other than meeting them there to camp we don’t have many other options.  We did meet a couple of women the first time we camped there, and they even lived fairly close to us.  We did a few things outside of camping, but for some reason, things fizzled out between us after about a year.

The other contributor to not having much of a social life is a little thing I like to call a job.  I was a stay at home mom for all those years of friend making.  I had time to commit to lunch dates and such.  Now that my free time has been drastically reduced, I have to do a little more juggling to work in friends, but I’ve still got time to squeeze in some fun.  I am just surprised that making friends seems to be so much more of a process than it used to be.  It doesn’t seem to come so easily anymore.   I guess what I’m saying is that since my gold friends aren’t available to me anymore, I’m in the market for some silver friends.  Any takers??

Cravings

I am a big fan of Mexican food.  Other than one Sour Cream Chicken Enchilada that seemed to be covered in white biscuit gravy instead of a sour cream sauce, I don’t think I’ve ever really had a complaint.  Even then, I just needed to rename it Granny’s Chicken and Gravy Roll-up and it tasted great.  Some Mexican meals were definitely better than others over the years, but even when they weren’t great I still ate them.  The only thing that ever really keeps me from eating Mexican food is how spicy it is.  I used to do spicy with no problem, but for some reason I can’t handle the heat like I did in my younger years.

The other day I had a craving for MexiDips and Chips from Taco Bueno.  Since the closest Taco Bueno is in Austin, I figured I would have to make some myself.  My freshman year of college I made frequent trip to the Taco Bueno across the street from my dorm.  It was there that I discovered the amazing idea of multiple dips and chips as a meal!  Yum!

Anyway…I made some.  I ate them.  Craving satisfied.

Now I’m craving a hamburger from Fuddruckers.  It’s been a few days since the craving started, but there has been no time to venture over to Fuddruckers.  At least there’s one fairly close to me though.

And the results are in…

1.  Some flavors of gourmet jelly beans do not go well with other.  When I wanted to try a strawberry and lemon together to see if it tasted like strawberry lemonade I accidentally ate a cinnamon and a lemon.  Not a good combination.

2.  Many people have no idea what celebrating 4/20 means.  I didn’t know the meaning of 420 until 2009 and this year, for the first time, I heard people actually talking about celebrating.  Most days I still wish I was clueless about some things.

3.  I AM able to start a fire from the banked, almost out embers of a fire from the night before after much coaxing, smoke inhalation and 30 minutes.  I refused to give in to the lighter, matches, and lighter fluid.  And I conquered!  (We went camping.)

4.  I do have some class.  The other day in the drive through line at the pharmacy I was dressed in sweat shorts and a t-shirt the same shade of heather gray as the shorts.  I was starving and had gone through the drive through at KFC a few minutes before.  I decided to chow down while I waited my turn in line.  Just before I lifted the hot wing to my lips I glanced over at the car next to mine in line.  Mercedes, dressed for success woman, hair perfected coifed, staring straight at me.  I smiled and slowly slid the fried hot wing back into the bag and held out until I was driving away.  I didn’t make it all the way home before I cleaned that wing though.

5.  I love Shakira.  I always liked her before, but I am enjoying her immensely on The Voice.  She just seems like a fresher version of Christina, who I also enjoy.  And I love the singer Caroline who was on Team Blake but has now become part of Team Adam, who I also love, by the way.  Lots of love over here!
